Last Thursday, May 30, the Fondo de Arte Joven (FAJ) and the Los Carbonell Foundation / NG Art Gallery, partner and manager in the visual arts modality of the project, inaugurated the group exhibition The reason for constancy at the White Room Gallery, located in the Convent and Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi.
The exhibition brings together works by women artists who have been linked to the teaching of visual arts in Havana during the last three decades, with emphasis on those young creators who are currently engaged in this work.
According to curator Sandra Garcia, the show reveres the power of a group of Cuban women artists who at some point in their careers chose to stand up in front of a classroom to share their skills and creative philosophies. It proposes a dialogue between some of those historic Maestras who taught art in Havana -from the 1960s to the 2000s- and those who succeeded them, sometimes as students, other times also as educators.
"Maybe it's a risk to organize "another women's exhibition"; there's always that feeling of losing sight of the very thing you're trying to make visible. But different conversations in recent months led me here; listening to young Cuban artists talk about the absence of referents in art schools was, to say the least, disturbing," Garcia adds.
The title makes an intertextual game with the poem by Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, like a white flag. No one is above, no one below. The qualities belong to human nature and not to a gender identity.
The reason for constancyThe exhibition, which will be open to the public until September 2024, joins five other exhibitions held by the FAJ since its founding in January 2023, and will be open to the public until September 2024.
