On the afternoon of Friday, October 6, the results of the 2nd Contemporary Art Salon were announced at the René Valdés Cedeño Gallery in the city of Santiago de Cuba. At the event, the Youth Art Fund (YAF) awarded a collateral prize to artist Edel Fonseca, consisting of the financing of a creative project.
The selection, made by Sandra García Herrera and Caridad Figueroa, YAF representatives, was based on the artist’s questioning of existential issues in the work Cara a cara, with a critical view of society.
The emphasis on making an ephemeral work to enhance the relationship with the viewer, as well as the choice of using drawing as an expressive language, were other aspects taken into account to award the young Camagüey-born artist.
The winning piece was chosen from the group of 16 participating creators in the age range stipulated by the YAF, from 18 to 35 years.
During the day, René Alejandro Noa García won the grand prize for his creation En busca de Arturo, while mentions were awarded to artist Gretell Arrate Hechavarría for the piece Saturno devorando a su hijo and to Edel Fonseca himself for the very piece awarded by the YAF.
Organized by the Caguayo Foundation, the Contemporary Art Salon boosts creation in the eastern region of Cuba –from Guantanamo to Camagüey–, makes visible and promotes different artistic practices and offers possibilities of approaching exhibition and commercialization circuits.
