Landscape for the next century

In the context of Servando Cabrera Moreno’s centennial. May 2023.

Salón Blanco Gallery, May 26 – September 6, 2023

Cuban artist Servando Cabrera Moreno was born on May 28, 1923 in Havana. A century later, in 2023, a series of actions were organized to preserve his memory and artistic legacy on the centennial of his birth, May 28.

Paisaje para el próximo siglo (Landscape for the next century) is the title of this project, taken from a 1975 painting by Cabrera Moreno. Its very choice expresses the dialogue to be established between two periods, between the creator that Servando was and the artists who today can acknowledge him as a reference or inspiration; or who, simply, choose to pay homage to him. These are two periods in the midst of which a century imposes itself: one hundred years of Cuban art and phases that remind us of a certain cyclical theory about history.

Titles were a significant element in Servando’s production, so much so that he had the practice of conceiving them even before creating his pieces. Many of the artist's notes are preserved with lists of labels for works that he never produced. The idea of working constantly and without complacency to achieve that work yet to be executed is connected with the character that we understand creation should have, especially when it comes to emerging artists.

Paisaje para el próximo siglo speaks of the future; of an artistic and intellectual imprint that Servando may not have been fully aware of, but which, evidently, has endured in this new century.
